re exercise I go running a few times a week, muscle condition once or twice a week AND swim once or twice a week how on earth can football hurt this much!?!

I think it would be because it's a different sort of exercise. Football is high impact with twisting, turning, speed changes and contact. You are putting your body through a whole range of different pressures. But there is good news; keep it up and the pain will decrease!
