who wins? you decide...

Today is the final day in the Big Brother house.  I watched the first night, then tuned out for a while, and have picked up again recently.  It is incredibly fascinating to watch, as well as incredibly inappropriate at times - there have been times when we have had to switch off, such was the content.

Anyway, tonight it all comes to an end for another year.  The big question is; who will stroll off into the sunset with the cash?  I don't know.  I'm not really that fussed.  Why don't you decide?!

the boys of ballikinrain

I watched The Boys of Ballikinrain on BBC2 last night; you can get to the Ballikinrain website by clicking here and The Herald report is here.  I am not quite sure how to describe the emotions the programme produced - saddening, encouraging, tear jerking, heart warming, angering.  It is a new series, I'm not sure how many weeks it runs for, and I would encourage anyone with an hour to spare from 9-10 on a Monday evening to watch it.

preaching prep

Watching the Colts win the Superbowl led to a very late night, so late in fact that you might not even have called it an early morning.  But it was an enjoyable game to watch, made all the more so by the knowledgeable company (not all 3 are either knowledgeable in this area or were there, just the American!)

So it goes without saying that it was a slow start to the day.  But I had work this afternoon and an All Age planning meeting this evening.  These meetings are real highlights for me; I love getting together with my friends and seeing ideas getting bounced around leading to a service at the end of it all.  I am speaking at the coming All Age service, something which I really enjoy, in fact it will be two services in a row for me as I speak at Deeper on one Sunday evening and then the next Sunday morning at All Age.

Tomorrow I will be in college.  It is not a lecture day but will no doubt be challenging as it will involve a fair amount of sermon prep.  I was reading a book the other day about preaching preparation and one of the points it made was that the preacher should always 'hear' the sermon as they prepare it.  This is something that I find is the case and is one of the things that I love about preparing to preach.

But that is for tomorrow.  For tonight it is the final episode of series 3...

public or private?

I was watching The West Wing last night (series 4 now).  During one scene a character said that he had been intimidated by the Presidents Catholic faith when explaining why he hadn't told the President earlier about the twins he and his ex wife were expecting out of wedlock.  The Presidents response was that it was his faith, that it worked for him, but that it wasn't for him to put on anyone else.  It reminds me of how, from time to time, we hear people in public office refer to their "private" faith and what seems to be being said is that it doesn't affect their public role.

Yet the thing about following Jesus, whatever denomination we may be a part of, is that it should affect every area of life.  I play rugby, I follow Jesus.  Whilst there will be times when I let myself and my faith down on the pitch it is not sufficient for me to say that it is a private faith and therefore shouldn't influence my on pitch decisions.  My mother once told me of a discussion she had with someone in which they ranked their priorities.  She said that she was first a Christian and only then a wife, a mother, a daughter etc.  The person that she was talking to just couldn't comprehend this.  But that is the life of a disciple of Christ.  It is about putting him first.

Of course the President shouldn't have judged the situation, the log in his own eye being a constant reminder of that.  But the Christian faith should be more than just a "works for me" thing.  It is the way, the truth and the life.  It is hope in the darkness.  It should be public and not private.

moody me

The weather is horrible and my mood at times today has not been much better!  I made a short trip to try and get some Christmas presents but failed miserably and whilst I was out my work (I am a sports coach at a local school) phoned to say that they were sending the boys home as the pitches were flooded.  As I was out without my phone numbers I couldn't see if the person I had hoped to hang out with for some chat and banter could after all.  In the end I spend a rather miserable afternoon watching the West Wing, thinking about what to read now college is done, and writing.

Days like today show me so clearly that I enjoy people.  I love hanging out with folk whether I know them well or not.  I love talking to people and being talked to and I really hope that this will serve me well in future ministry.  Future ministry in mind I have some form filling to try and complete tomorrow but otherwise, until rugby in the evening, it may be a person-less day.  Perhaps I should go to a coffee shop somewhere to fill in the forms and hope that I can find someone to chat with there!

naming

Yesterday was a long but enjoyable day.  There were two teaching sessions by Ian and some good times to meet with and get to know people a bit better.  In the afternoon there was the option of a walk.  Before arriving I hadn't realised it was optional so went with all the waterproof stuff I own.  But when we got there a quiet rumour was circulating that a few guys were going to stay in the safety of the village and watch the rugby in the pub.  Not wanting them to be alone I agreed to stay (a decision that upon seeing some of the walkers putting on their 'gear' - high tech! - seemed like a good one).

We had an enjoyable trip back, focussing particularly on baby names - but I won't say too much as the guy who thought it was such a great idea to call his baby 'Coxy' might not have got the all clear from his wife yet...hang in there bro!!!

there's been a murder

The world famous TV show Taggart is filming outside today.  From my window I can see the stars having their hair brushed and makeup touched up whilst some poor person stands holding an umbrella over them (but not over the holder of said umbrella!)  I wonder if me and Johnny were to head on down if they'd be able to find parts for two such photogenic young things.
