When we moved to Ayr we decided that we wouldn't get a TV licence. And no, that doesn't mean that we're watching it illegally it means that we're not watching it - live at least. But we do still have the TV wired up to a DVD player and have been watching various films and boxsets, which whilst proving to be slightly costly in terms of renting or buying has definitely led to a cutting down of time in front of the 'box'.
So what have we been watching?
Well, over the past 3 weeks we have watched all of Gavin and Stacey: this wasn't actually a series that I was keen to see or had even heard much about but Karen bought me the first series for Christmas and the second for my birthday. I loved it so much that I used some birthday money for the final series (and we saw the Christmas special on TV - not our own! - on Christmas eve).
I was also given the Planet Earth boxset for my birthday. We aren't far through it, but what we've seen so far is brilliant. Another birthday gift was Michael McIntyre's live DVD: again, I wasn't sure what to expect but it was really funny, what should probably be described (and I think he might describe it as such himself) as 'life observation' humour.
Then this weekend we watched 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and 'The Girl who Played with Fire'. I had recently read the books, and the films don't even come close (no surprise there) - but they were OK and I think that Karen might give the books a shot if she has time.
So that's about it really: but a little bird tells me that a late Christmas present of all The West Wing series on DVD may be winging its way to Ayr. I hope the rumour's true, and if it is I anticipate a good few evenings re-watching the best drama I have ever seen!
